Tips for Storing Seasonal Office Decorations

Holiday storage concerns aren't limited to your home. If your business or office puts up any sort of holiday decorations – whether it's for Halloween, Valentine's Day, Christmas, Hanukkah, or any other seasonal event – a good office storage system is needed to organize and store them afterward.

How Do You Store Things in an Office?

The usual rules apply for storage, whether you're in an office or at home. First, declutter or get rid of what you don't need. For businesses, one of the main space wasters is paperwork. So, if you need to free up space, consider switching to a digital document management system.

Next, categorize the items that need to be stored. Ideally, store items near where they are used. For example, store napkins, coffee, etc. in or near a break room. Office supplies like pens, pads, tape, and so forth should be stored in a central location, if possible, so everyone has easy access.

Keep items in a logical order with those used most often in the front and lesser used items in the back. If containers or bins of some kind are used, choose clear ones so people can easily see the contents, or use a label maker, so team members don't have to waste time searching for what they need.

How Do You Declutter Seasonal Décor?

Decluttering seasonal décor just takes four steps:

  1. Pull out everything to assess and review.

  2. Set a limit as to how much you'll keep.

  3. Purge the surplus and anything that's broken or doesn't fit.

  4. Sort again, organize, and store.

When going through this process, be honest with yourself about what you use. Also, be clear on your final vision of the decorated space. If you've migrated from red and green to a gold and silver look over the years (for example), let go of items that don't fit that design scheme.

How Do You Organize and Decorate an Office?

First, set your parameters. For example, are you decorating in December for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or a mixture?

Then pick a style. Will your Halloween decorations be cartoon-y, scary, or Addams Family spooky Gothic?

Decide what you want and how you want to decorate. Will December decorations include a tree or a different approach? Do you want a few simple, elegant touches or decorations everywhere? Using December as an example, do you want twinkling lights everywhere? Pine, real or faux, boughs with ribbon? Tinsel garland?

And how often do you want to decorate for holidays? Only in December? Just the fall holidays from Halloween to New Year's? Or all year round and a wide range of holidays?

How Do You Store Seasonal Items?

Office storage for holiday decorations will depend, in part, upon how many holidays you decorate for and the extent of the decorations you have. That said, having enough storage bins to hold everything while ensuring that they stack nicely will go a long way. Make sure to label every box or bin clearly.

And, since it's highly likely that you'll be putting away the most decorations in January, take a moment to ensure that your decorations are in usage order. In other words, put the December decorations on the bottom or in the back, with containers for fall decorations on top or in front of those, then your 4th of July decorations, and so forth so you have what you need for the next holiday at your fingertips. Then rotate as you go throughout the year.
